The PTE Academic takes roughly two hours from start to finish. It covers speaking, writing, reading, and listening, but not in four neat separate blocks the way one might expect. The sections bleed into each other a little, which actually reflects how language works in real life. A student reads something, then writes about it. Listens to something, then summarises it.
The test begins with the Speaking and Writing section, which takes about 54 to 67 minutes. You’ll do a mix of tasks like reading aloud, repeating sentences, describing images, and answering short questions. You’ll also summarize texts and write an essay. Since the tasks are varied, it gives a more realistic picture of how well you can actually communicate.
Next is the Reading section, which lasts around 30 minutes. It includes multiple choice questions, paragraph rearrangement, and fill-in-the-blank based on academic texts. This part is not just about finding answers. It checks if you understand ideas, arguments, and how information flows in academic writing.
The Listening section comes last and takes about 30 to 43 minutes. You’ll listen to lectures and discussions, then answer questions, summarize what you heard, and fill in missing words. The audio plays only once, so staying focused is important. Many students find this part challenging if they are not used to listening to lectures at a natural pace.
Scoring is done by AI, which actually makes things fair. Everyone is graded the same way. You don’t just get an overall score; you also see your performance in areas like grammar, fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, spelling, and writing. This helps you understand exactly where you need to improve.
Countries Accepting PTE
PTE started with a reputation as the Australian test. That is not the full picture anymore. Students from Karachi have used a single PTE score to apply to universities across three or four countries at the same time, the UK, Canada, Australia, and parts of Europe, without having to sit a different test for each destination.
A few things worth understanding before booking.
AI scoring means no accent bias. Every response goes through Pearson’s automated engine. Scores stay valid for two years from the test date. If plans shift, if January intake becomes more appealing than September, or if a new country gets added to the shortlist, the score remains usable throughout that window.
Governments Accepting PTE
It used to be that English tests were purely a university requirement. That changed. Several governments now require or accept PTE Academic as part of visa applications because they trust the rigour of how it is run and the consistency of how it is scored.
Machine scoring removes room for error. When a visa office receives a PTE score, they know it was produced by the same algorithm that scored every other PTE result. There is no human variation, no bad testing day, no tired reviewer. The result is what it is.
Every session is biometrically verified. Pearson VUE test centers fingerprint candidates and monitor continuously throughout the test. Immigration departments know the person named in the result report is the person who actually sat in the room.

Graduate programs in engineering, business, health sciences, and law regularly list PTE alongside IELTS as an accepted option.

The PTE requirement for Canada is accepted by institutions including the University of Toronto, McGill, UBC, and colleges across Ontario and British Columbia.
For students who also have immigration ambitions beyond just studying, PTE scores are recognised in certain IRCC immigration streams as well. Test scheduling in Karachi is flexible enough to plan around school, tuition, and family commitments.
