LanguageCert Score Calculator & Results Explained
Your LanguageCert score indicates your English communicative competence. However, understanding your marks and their CEFR levels can sometimes feel confusing. You might want to check if your score is B1, B2, or C1. You may also be wondering about the impact of individual skill scores on your overall score.
The LanguageCert score calculator enables you to comprehend these scores and to estimate your English level. The method of calculation, however, varies according to the exam you choose. There are different scoring systems for LanguageCert Academic, General and International ESOL.

This guide will describe how LanguageCert scores are derived, the pass mark, and how to interpret your LanguageCert results.
How the LanguageCert Score Calculator Works
LanguageCert uses different scoring methods across its English exams. Hence, it is important to have a proper understanding of the type of exam you are going to take.
LanguageCert Academic and General
Both examinations focus on the four English skills:
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
The LanguageCert Global Scale assigns a score of up to 100 for each skill. LanguageCert takes the average of the four skill scores to determine your overall score. All skills are valued equally.
For instance, if a candidate gets 65 in listening, 70 in reading, 60 in writing, and 75 in speaking, he/she gets an overall score of 67.5.
LanguageCert International ESOL
In International ESOL, scoring is done differently. It splits the test into two separate tests:
- Written examination: Listening, Reading and Writing, 150 marks.
- Spoken exam: Speaking (50 marks).
You can take both exams together or separately. The result and grade for each exam are separate.
These differences are important to understand so that the LanguageCert score calculator is used appropriately. Check out LanguageCert for exam choices and testing schedules.
LanguageCert Score to CEFR Level Table
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a measure of English proficiency based on six levels. The levels are from A1 (beginner) to C2 (highly proficient).
LanguageCert Academic and General use the following Global Scale:
LanguageCert score | CEFR level | Proficiency |
90 to 100 | C2 | Mastery |
75 to 89 | C1 | Advanced |
60 to 74 | B2 | Upper intermediate |
40 to 59 | B1 | Intermediate |
20 to 39 | A2 | Elemantary |
10 to 19 | A1 | Begginer |
0 to 9 | Below A1 | Below beginner |
These score ranges will assist you in understanding your overall English proficiency.
For example, an overall score of 68 indicates B2 proficiency. 82, for instance, is the score for C1 proficiency.
The LanguageCert score calculator gives you an estimate of your CEFR level when you enter your scores. Remember to always refer to your official test report for the outcome, though.
Pass Marks: B1, B2, C1 (High Pass, Pass, Fail)
The marks required vary depending on the type of exam, as shown on the LanguageCert score calculator. International ESOL offers three levels: High Pass, Pass, and Fail.
These are the published grade boundaries:
Written Exam (Listening, Reading, and Writing)
- High Pass: 101 to 150 marks
- Pass: 75 to 100 marks
- Fail: 0 to 74 marks
Spoken Exam (Speaking)
- Pass: 30 to 37 marks
- Pass: 25 to 37 marks
- Fail: 0 to 24 marks
For example, candidates taking the LanguageCert B1 exam need at least 75 out of 150 in the Written exam and 25 out of 50 in the Spoken exam to pass both components.
B1, B2, and C1 International ESOL grade boundaries.
The overall grade boundaries between the B2 and the C1 exams are the same. But each level assesses different language skills and levels of difficulty.
Note: LanguageCert SELT exams have different score requirements for each UK visa application. You will need to confirm marks for your exam and visa application type.

How to Calculate Your Overall Score?
It is easier to have an overall result using a LanguageCert score calculator. With LanguageCert Academic and General, you simply add your 4 skill scores together and divide by 4.
Take this example:
Skill | Your score |
Listening | 75 |
Reading | 60 |
Writing | 65 |
Speaking | 75 |
Total | 270 |
Divide 270 by 4.
270 ÷ 4 = 67.5
The overall score is 67.5, which is within the B2 band.
This allows you to make an educated guess on your result before you get your official report.
However, International ESOL uses separate written and spoken grades. These cannot be combined to get the four-skill average.

LanguageCert Score vs IELTS Band
Students often use LanguageCert results in conjunction with IELTS bands when applying for study abroad.
LanguageCert has an official comparison between its CEFR levels and IELTS bands. The published alignment shows these approximate equivalents:
CEFR level | IELTS band |
C2 | 8.5 to 9.0 |
C1 | 7.0 to 8.0 |
B2 | 5.5 to 6.5 |
B1 | 4.0 to 5.0 |
These comparisons of the LanguageCert score calculator show the relationship between English proficiency levels. They do not give a one-to-one match-up between the scores of individual exams.
However, universities and immigration authorities have the option of establishing their own English language requirements. Always check the accepted test and minimum scores before applying.
For more information, see the official LanguageCert CEFR comparison.
When and How Do You Get Your Results?
LanguageCert reports results based on the exam that you take.
Official results are typically available within three working days of the end of a LanguageCert Academic and General exam. International ESOL candidates have their results sent within 10 business days after the exam.
Your results are available in your LanguageCert online account. The exam provider also notifies using email or your test centre. Your result document contains valuable information about how well you did.
The Test Report for Academic and General displays:
- Each student’s scores for all four skills.
- Your overall score.
- The final CEFR level achieved.
International ESOL candidates are issued with separate statements of results for Written and Spoken assessments. Also, you can view your certificate and present your results to institutions as needed.
Didn’t Reach Your Target Score? Next Steps
Failure to get your desired result does not mean you cannot succeed. You know where you need to work on improving the weak points before the next go-round.
Here are some tips to help:
1. Review Your Skill Scores

LanguageCert provides repeat testing opportunities. However, there are conditions for retaking exams, depending on the type and the booking of the exam. Look at the choices before re-registering again.
